Every learner learns differently but we all go through the same phases while learning a new language. Whether you just want to get by to travel, become fluent or reach a high level to feel legitimate working in your non-native language, knowing about these different stages helps you adjust your expectations and focus on the most relevant actions at any given point.
Vocabulary, grammar, listening, practice, mindset, cultural awareness... How do you progressively develop your language proficiency so that your brain can think in your target language (and not about it)?
Learners (including myself) waste so much energy feeling bad about ourselves, it's driving me crazy. I hate wasting stuff, especially when they're as valuable as food, time or energy.
What if we decided to stop wasting our limited energy and instead put ALL OF IT into productive actions leading to actually learning? Focusing on the positive is easier said than done and yet it's the one thing that will change your experience of learning a language.
Knowing about the typical language learning journey helps your brain realize that what you're going through is normal. I repeat, the struggles you're facing don't mean you have a problem, or worse that you ARE the problem, they're inherent to learning a new language.
Everyone faces challenges. Maybe you can only see yours and not everyone else's.
How would it make you feel to know you're not alone in this messy process of learning a language?
Start taking ownership of your learning and develop a growth mindset.
Discover how "spiral learning" will help you select the best course of action for you at any given time in your journey.
about the phases and challenges all learners go through when learning a new language. It is meant to be a "big picture", a broad overview. I won't go into details, I want to cut the overwhelm and focus on the essential.
In the spirit of "spiral learning", this is an introduction to the intricacies of language learning.
BONUS: 60 minutes of Q&A with Cathy (you can listen to the audio of the live Q&A recorded on June 20, 2024).
I invite you to review this crash course every now and then. Every time you'll come back to it, I bet something new will catch your attention and help you work on what's bothering you.
Take ownership of the process and taylor it to your needs and personality from the start.
Linguistic skills: what to focus on when you're starting to learn a language.
Mindset: debunking some myths.
Getting help: Working with a tutor, teacher, coach, friends...
How to get through the intermediate slump one step at a time, without giving up despite the moments of panic, self-doubt and discouragement. There's light at the end of the tunnel, I swear!
The challenges of the intermediate level(s)
Linguistic skills: what to focus on when you're at the intermediate level (lower, mid and high).
Mindset: it's not the destination, it's the journey (Ralph Waldo Emerson). How to use this philosophy to stay motivated.
Getting help: Working with a tutor, teacher, coach, friends...
When can you confidently write "fluent" or "bilingual" on your resume? When can you feel it in your heart? Do you ever stop feeling like an outsider in a group of native speakers? These are profound questions. They have no definite answer but I'll share my best insights, based on my own experience and on many conversations with my clients and multilingual friends.
Linguistic skills: even native speakers could spend a lifetime refining their skills and deepening their understanding. You can do it too if that's what you want!
Cultural awareness
Mindset: I won't say "it's all in your head" but, honestly, most of what's blocking you probably is "all in your head" 😉
By the way, who's your hostess?
Professional Neurolanguage Coach® and Teacher Trainer. Hostess of the podcast My Polyglot Life en français.
Dear language learner, I want you to feel good about yourself and enjoy the learning process!
I want to give learners some tools to take the lead in their learning journey so they can make the most of their time and effort (and hard-earned money). Language coaching encourages learners to use metacognitive strategies to overcome mental blocks and identify the most efficient actions for them. The coach (that's me 🤗) is your guide, your most ardent supporter and your accountability partner.
A language learner myself, late bilingual French/English (meaning I wasn't bilingual until my late 20s), advanced in Spanish, intermediate in Japanase, expat, I'm sharing this journey with you.

Bonjour Cathy, J’ai terminé ton cours et il m’a vraiment aidé dans mon apprentissage. Ce fut une expérience enrichissante. J’ai trouvé les choses qui gâchent mes progrès, et mes grands défis.
Hi Cathy, I have completed your course and it has really helped me in my learning. It was an enriching experience. I uncovered what was hindering my progress, and my biggest challenges.
I loved learning more about what's going on in my brain and finding ways to adapt the learning process to my needs as a neurodivergent person.
It will if
You have questions about the challenges you're currently facing while learning a language.
You are not an experienced language learner and would like to know more about what it entails.
Your favorite question words are "Why" and "How". You like knowing how things work and you're currently learning a language.
You currently feel stuck in your learning journey.
You're planning on keeping learning this language (or languages) and you're looking for a guide you can refer to whenever you're facing a plateau or feeling frustrated with your progress.
You've never learned another language as an adult but some of your colleagues or employees are non-native speakers and you'd like to know how you can help them feel more comfortable.
No, absolutely not. It's about the general phases of language learning and although some phases may last longer if your native and target languages are radically different (like Japanese and English), the principles and mechanisms are identical.
Since a lot of my audience is learning French, I might use French learning as an example more often than other other languages.
Yes! You will receive the recording after the event. And there's more!
You'll also have access for free to the upcoming online course (the webinar recording will be divided into chapters and subtitles in English and French added).
The course will be priced higher than the webinar ($99 for the course vs $59 for the webinar). Don't miss the opportunity to get it now for half the cost!
So, you've watched the recording and you don't like the content? I'll give you your money back as long as you cancel before the live event.
